Treated With Respect

I’m from Texas, ground zero for the fight to “protect women” by forcing the closing of health clinics where women have access to reproductive care. I don’t understand the lack of compassion for the health issues women go through their entire adult lives—breathtaking even if you leave out the medical and economic facts impacting women. Health care is so personal—from my first pap smear to now, pre-menopause—I’ve been through the spectrum including endometriosis and infertility.

“I don’t understand the lack of compassion for the health issues women go through their entire adult lives.”

Almost 10 years ago, after a few years of infertility treatments, I wasn’t feeling right and went to my gynecologist. After a pelvic exam by the nurse practitioner, she directly sent me to get a sonogram that showed an ectopic pregnancy.

My doctor was on the phone and told me what this meant and what we needed to do, starting with me walking across the street to the hospital. Patiently and lovingly, my doctor explained the procedure to my partner and I, and then we quietly waited on a small bed together until I was wheeled away for emergency surgery.

The entire experience was peaceful, with only my doctor and partner. All Texas women, all women, should be treated with this kind of straightforward, respectful care.

The personal becomes political when access and privacy are disrespected and threatened. I can’t imagine having to travel far from home or having the insidious “waiting period” as if to imply I am not capable of knowing my own mind, or having to endure medically unnecessary procedures (all proposed and passed by Republican state legislatures) in the name of “protecting women.”

I had access to the protection I needed and will always need. All women need this peace of mind.
